I too think you have a very healthy dose of empathy. Whatever the incident was, you took away a lesson and implemented a recovery and preventive strategy for non-recurrence. You now have the experience to provide 'greater good' advice to others - to have a solid working relationship with your public affairs / communications department. We now see that the time to forge one isn't after an incident, but walking in the door of an organization.

Please let this be the cathartic experience it was meant to be and now that you have owned it and remedied it, let go of it...

I just took the SPHR yesterday and passed. Although I am still worried I am going to get a letter from HRCI telling me it was a computer glitch and that I didn't pass.

It was nothing like my PHR certification experience 6 years ago. I studied and studied but none of it applied to the SPHR test. I had to tap into my critcal thinking skills and 13 years of experience to answer the questions.

Right about question 20 I thought "there's no way you are passing this" but I kept at it and used the full 4 hours. I breezed thru the PHR in 2 hours with full review of all questions so I was pretty worried yesterday. In fact, I broke down and cried when I saw those 4 letters -- PASS. I will never, ever let my certification lapse again!

Don't worry about it. I was disappointed there...

sometimes hr folks take the bitter pill because of what the profession mandates. provide 'service' and exercise 'control'. simultaneously. people think that an hr guy is a servant masquerading as a master. obviously they are confused, don't like it, and dish out bitter pills :-)

Setting your own rules and standards is definitely a way to find self-fulfillment, but it's not going to change the systems that prevent equality in corporate America. I spent years under the delusion that I could be a change agent and work to change the systems and the insiders' view myself, but eventually grasped the reality that the only people who can change the systems significantly enough so that I see results within my career are those controlling the infrastructure -- the insiders -- and it's not in their own interest to change the systems that secure their power. So, the most effective way to change the systems is to have *critical mass* of traditionally underutilized groups achieving leadership positions, making them a new faction of insiders with the power to change the systems. To get into those roles, they need to navigate the current systems. Trouble is, in my experience, every time someone seems to break through, they suddenly have outsider amnesia and don't follow through on the goals they once had, or, perhaps they are too outnumbered to have a voice even inside the boardroom. Congratulations Paul. I took it in 2007 and studied a lot not expecting to pass and I did. Now I am in the camp with Mr. Tincup, who I heard say he is NEVER going to let the certification lapse, because he is not doing that again.

Congratulations on your SPHR accomplishment!! I passed my PHR in 2001, and then my SPHR in 2011. It was SO much information, but I took a course where I had great interaction with several other HR professionals, so it was nice to be able to share war stories and network as well. Testing itself was stressful; I was ecstatic about passing, but really enjoyed the course and digging into the HR details most of all.

Now just don't forget to recertify when it's time. I got busy and after the third round of recertification, totally forgot. Now I'm debating about whether or not to take the test again. I don't wish that fate on anyone.
