Friday's Quick Question: HR Existence

Just a straight question to kick start your brain for one more day of the work week.

Yesterday I saw this tweet from Paul Hebert (@incentintel)
"HR as practiced today, exist solely because managers suck at their jobs.
which got me thinking....

Could it be that HR exists today because of something that simple, or
is the reason more complex?

p.s. This is not a Paul vs. Paul contest. I'm just curious.

This is a loaded question, isn't it?

As a non-HR professional but someone who works with lots of HR folks, I'd say that it depends. Sometimes it's as simple as making up for mistakes made by people who were never taught how to manage. Other times it's as complex of trying to change people's behavior.

Or, maybe, those are both the same thing...

Thanks Carol for the comment. I think both are the same thing and both are complex.

It may be true, but that shouldn't mean that we let the past define the future. HR has a lot to offer a smart organization in terms of talent development and information. However we got here, it's where we go next that matters.
